Wind Power Generation

Wind power generators for your home have been around for a while now, but they are not suitable for every situation, they need a constant wind speed of around 18 km/hr for the small units, and if the wind is not blowing you not going to be generating any power, they can be off grid or grid tied like the solar setup.

Wind turbines are grouped into two designs the horizontal axis turbine and the vertical axis turbine, both types have their own advantages and disadvantages, the horizontal wind turbine is the type you see high up on hill tops in groups on a wind farm they generate electricity for the national grid, the horizontal derives from the direction the shaft holding the blades are orientated.

The vertical axis turbine is orientated vertically as the name implies, these type of turbines are generally alot smaller than the horizontal type, and are mainly used in residential situations or mounted onto the top of barns and sheds to supply power for lighting, the vertical axis turbine is also ideal in extremely windy conditions.

The wind turbine can be used in conjunction with solar power panals, and like the solar setup they can have a battery storage bank, for supplying power when there is no wind blowing, or they can be tied into the grid system, for wind generators to work effectively they need to be mounted in a constant air stream the ideal location is high up on a ridge, a residential area is not the ideal place for turbines as they produce noise and other building will interrupt the air flow to the turbine blades.

The horizontal type wind turbines can generate a substantial amount of power depending on the rating of the generator, a 5kw turbine is more than enough to power a household for a family, however the wind does not always blow 24/7, so you need a huge battery bank to cope with the power demand when there is no wind, the wind turbines are very expensive and cost tens of thousands for a small system, a properly setup solar system would be more cost effective than wind power.
