Preserving Food

Dried Fruits

Methods for preserving food have been around for along time, but there are not that many people that practice the methods, so much food goes to waste these days, and most people buy there preserved food from super markets in the form of tinned fruit and vegetables, and with added preservatives that are not so good for you.

Preserving fruit by bottling is a common method for fruits like peaches and apples they are precooked and bottled in sterile and air tight jars with a syrup, and preserved this way will last a considerable amount of time and provide you with fresh tasting fruit deserts.

Pickling is another method that goes way back to the settler days, pickling is suited to vegetables but is also suitable for some fruits, pickling involves the use of brine or vinegar depending on the type of vegetable you are preserving, but the fruit or vegetables are fermented which produces a different texture and taste compared to the bottling method.

For preserving meats and fish the method is different, the meats and fish need to be dehydrated and alot of salt is needed to remove the moisture from these products, once the moisture has been removed the meat is said to be cured, this method is not usually used in developed countries that much as a freezer is a better option.

Drying certain types of foods mainly fruits in the sun is also a popular method of food preservation and is a simple method that works well, foods like apricots and tomatoes are a great for drying in the sun and this method increases the flavor as well, fish can also be dried in the sun, this is how they have preserved fish for centuries in some countries.
