The Benefits of Honey

When we think of honey it is usually associated with the benefit of tasting great as a food product, honey is spread on bread for sandwiches used in the morning breakfast cereal and spread across a slice of of toast every day by thousands of people all over the world.  

The sweet tasting substance has alot more uses than just for food, the ancient civilizations have known other benefits of honey for thousands of years, honey is essentially made up of fructose at around thirty eight percent by volume, glucose around thirty one percent and dextrin, it also contains small amounts of vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

There are thousands of different honey types produced by bees all over the world and while the basic taste remains similar, the combination of substances that make up the honey vary considerably from hive to hive as the bees are collecting and pollinating on different flowers from each area.

For medicinal purposes the honey provides a moist environment for tissue to heal and while modern antibiotics are effective against infection they produce many negative side effects, the honey can render even a heavily infected area sterile with out any side effects.

For burns on the skin small or large honey is known to promote new skin growth and aid the healing of the skin and the honey will not stick to dressings and will not tear of new skin growth when any dressings are removed, so for any small ailments the honey is of great use.

Honey is also a great sweetener and more healthy than large doses of artificial sweeteners that can have long term negative effects on your body, you can drip it over your cereal or mix the honey in your tea or coffee, honey can be used as a cough syrup when you have a cold and can be used as a lip balm when you have cracked lips.

Manuka honey is widely used around the world for its medicinal purposes the Manuka honey is one of the best honey types for its antibacterial properties, it is used in the treatment of certain types of cancer, reducing high cholesterol, reducing inflammation and also for the treatment of diabetes.
