Organic or Traditional

Organic food has become popular with people all over the world but is organic a good choice for a self sufficient life style, organic refers to the method that products or food are grown and processed the term organic means by a natural way, no synthetic or man made chemicals or products are added to the final product to either grow or preserve that product.

For plants this means natural fertilizer like compost and manure from horses, sheep and cattle, weeds are controlled by natural means of hand weeding and mulching of vegetables, pests are kept in check by traps for rodents birds and natural pesticides.

For animals like sheep and cattle or pigs, they are feed natural foods like grass, siloge or other natural feeds, disease is kept at bay by clean conditions where they are housed, correct grazing techniques and proven healthy livestock diets.

With the traditional farming methods there are a host of substances used that are defiantly not good for human consumption, one substance that comes to mind is growth hormones and these hormones can be included in the pellets you are feeding your pigs or other livestock, then there are the sprays for both plants and live stock to control pests, these are quite ofthen used by small farms and self sufficient life stylers all over the world.

Organic produce for the average small holder or self sufficient family is most likely not worth the extra effort needed to achieve this, there are so many things that can go wrong with organic produce with out the conventional treatments or pest control, and when you get an out break of disease or pests on your plot you risk not having any food for the table.

Using conventional farming methods on your own farm you can at least control how many chemicals you are using and what type of chemicals and you know what is in your food, with food from the super market you have no idea what they are putting in there.
