Growing Tomatoes

Tomato plants

There is not many vegetables that can beat a tomato for its delicious taste either eat them raw with a pinch of salt or when they are cooked or roasted in an oven, they are a staple of many diets all around the world, they are used in most styles of cooking and bring out a sweet flavor in any food.

The Tomato is not the easiest vegetable to grow there are a number of pests and conditions that make growing them very difficult, tomatoes are best planted as seedlings in soil that is warm you cannot grow them in cold conditions unless they are in a heated environment inside a poly tunnel or commercial glass house system.

Buying seedlings from the garden center is usually the best way to start unless you have a glass house to sow the seeds and raise the seedlings, you need good fertilized soil that has a good potassium content and tomatoes like plenty of sunlight for them to grow, once they are planted you need to secure each plant to a stake or better still a few rows of wire or heavy rope running over the tomato beds and the plant will wind in and out of the wire and support its self.

Tomato plants require alot of care if they are to produce any good crops, they need constant watering and fertilizer like seaweed mix or manure, and try not to burn the plants with to much fertilizer in one place, you need to monitor the plants closely for any pests or fungus as these will spread very quickly and can kill the tomato plant in a very short time.

As the tomato plants grow in size you can take out the lateral growth that sprouts out the side of the stem, removing these laterals puts all the energy from the plant growing into producing better and more healthy fruit, keep all weeds away from the plants root system with a layer of mulch to protect them.
