 Fruit trees are a great addition to a self sufficient property, you can usually find a fruit variety to thrive in most temperate climates around the world, grafting of species has allowed fruit trees to grow in a wide range of soil types and conditions, and fruit trees add a mix of variety to your self sufficient garden. 

Apple trees are a great favorite there is nothing better than biting into a juicy and crisp apple, most apples brought at a super market have little taste and are usually soft with no crunch, apple trees prefer a rich soil that is moist and will not dry out, and that is free draining, apple trees take a few years of growing before you will be harvesting from them but the wait will be worth it.

Plum trees are great in cooler temperate climates, like the apple tree they require fertile soil conditions and a free draining area to grow well, mulching around the base and fertilizer will help growth as well, some plum varieties, more so the smaller trees can be grown in good sized containers, some plum trees are self pollinating and others require two plants to produce any fruit.

Cherry trees while not as popular as the other common fruit trees can be a great addition to your garden varieties, they are great for salads and most cherries have a sweet taste, the cherry tree requires full sun conditions and fertile soil, they are great as a visual effect when the blossoms are out and the flowers come in a variety of colors.

Pear trees are a great addition they taste great as a natural product and can be used in salads and also cooked for bottling, they are a large tree and require alot of room, the pear tree can be purchased in a wide variety of types and will take around three years before producing any fruit.

The citrus fruits like the orange tree and the lemon tree are usually popular to grow, the orange trees prefers a warm climate and needs fertilizing and a bit more care than the other trees, the lemon tree like the orange tree likes the warmer climate conditions and can be grown in large containers as well, lemon trees are popular for drinks and are used in food with a squeeze of the juice over the top.
